Traveling to the Philippines. The Pearl of the Orient, a collection of more than 7,000 beautiful islands, the Philippines has been continuously sculpted by Mother Nature and other, stronger countries.
Explored by Magellan in 1521 and named in honor of Prince Philip, the Spanish held the islands for 350 years before ceding them to the U.S. in 1899.
Historically, the Philippines was explored by the Portuguese and claimed by the Spanish before being ceded to the U.S. in 1899. The U.S. officially abandoned claims to the country in 1991.

Hi to all our viewers and subscribers. As promised we are going to set errors straight in the post; and add some more cool facts about The Philippines, added by you!
- Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal, circa 1480 - died 21 April 1521. He sailed under the Spanish Flag, and reached The Philippines on March 16 1521 (It will be the 496th anniversary this week). Magellan reached Homonhom Island, on the edge of The Philippines, and traded with the island king, Rajah Humabon, and they formed a bond. Magellan and his crew became involved in a war between Humabon, and a rival leader, and he was killed in battle.
- The Philippines, or 'Las Isla Filipinas' was named after King Philip II of Spain. However, as one of our viewers pointed out he was still Crown Prince of Asturia, when The Philippines were named after him. King Philip II's (known as el Prudente/the Prudent), reign of Spain was from 1527 to 1598. He also reigned over Portugal, as King Philip I, from 1581 to 1598.
- The Spanish ruled over The Philippines for 333 years. In 1898 The Spanish declared war on the United States of America. After The Battle of Manila, The US went on to rule The Philippines until...
- In 1935 the US passed an "Act of Transition", to declare The Filipino Government independent. The war with Japan delayed this act, but The Philippines gained full sovereignty in 1946.
- The eruption of Mt Pinatubo in 1991, caused a drop in global temperature of 1 degree fahrenheit, or 0.5 degrees Celcius. This was caused, by 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide being spewed into the atmosphere.
- According to "touropia", 2016: SM Megamall, and The SM Mall of Asia rank in the "10 largest Malls in the World". In addition another 7 are found in the top 30. This can vary according to the research sources.
- One of our readers informed us of this great fact! Manila's name is derived by the Tagalog name for a flowering mangrove plant: "Nila", and the Tagalog for "there is": "may". In Tagalog, Manila is spelled Maynila.
- The Battle of the Phillipines Sea is said to be "The largest "aircraft carrier battle", in history".
Some other corrections:
- Pateros is not a city. It is a Municipality in Metro Manila.
- We stated it was Camiguin Island, when in fact it was Panay.
- The volcano shown was not Mount Pinatubo, but Mount Mayon.
- Pinatubo is 91.1 km or 56.6 miles, from Manila.
- According to the 2010 census & housing, by The Phillipines Statistics Authority, Quezon City has a population of 2.8 million people.
- Manila has 42,857 people per sq km, according to the 2015 census.
- The pearl featured is not called "The Palawan Princess" but "The Pearl of Puerto" or "Puerto Island Princessa".
Hope this helps to clarify things. Thank you for watching. Subscribe for more cool facts!

The Philippines was named after King Philip II (King Felipe II) of Spain, not Prince Philip. Ferdinand Magellan, who is a Portuguese, sailed under the Spanish flag. Aside from the above-mentioned correction, this video is great and very informative.

Michael Filipinos were not thievish during that era as pointed out by Chinese traders who would even let the natives take their merchandise and expect a full return of gold/goods of the same value. The one you mentioned might be the Pacific islands east of the Philippines (forgot the name of the island but they named the island (English translation)"Island of Thieves") where the natives stole from Magellan's ships.

1:34 How can you fit 43 people in 1 square meter? Isn't it more like 23.3 square meter per person, since 1 square Km = 1,000,000 square meter?

Yes 3 floors of shack. You still did not get my point, it is impossible to fit 43 people standing on a surface measuring 1 meter square. Probably you can fit two.

Mercury - (Hg)What are the physical properties for the chemical element Mercury? http://chemical-elements.findthedata.com/l/57/Mercury#References&s=ref Mercury
Chemical element with the atomic number of 80
Also called Hg, quicksilver, and hydrargyrum
Mercury is a chemical element with symbol Hg and atomic number 80. It is commonly known as quicksilver and was formerly named hydrargyrum. A heavy, silvery d-block element, mercury is the only metallic element that is liquid at standard conditions for temperature and pressure; the only other element that is liquid under these conditions is bromine, though metals such as caesium, gallium, and rubidium melt just above room temperature.
Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly as cinnabar (mercuric sulfide). The red pigment vermilion is obtained by grinding natural cinnabar or synthetic mercuric sulfide.
Mercury is used in thermometers, barometers, manometers, sphygmomanometers, float valves, mercury switches, mercury relays, fluorescent lamps and other devices, though concerns about the element's toxicity have led to mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers being largely phased out in clinical environments in favor of alternatives such as alcohol- or galinstan-filled glass thermometers and thermistor- or infrared-based electronic instruments. Likewise, mechanical pressure gauges and electronic strain gauge sensors have replaced mercury sphygmomanometers. Mercury remains in use in scientific research applications and in amalgam for dental restoration in some locales. It is used in fluorescent lighting. Electricity passed through mercury vapor in a fluorescent lamp produces short-wave ultraviolet light which then causes the phosphor in the tube to fluoresce, making visible light.
Mercury poisoning can result from exposure to water-soluble forms of mercury (such as mercuric chloride or methylmercury), by inhalation of mercury vapor, or by ingesting any form of mercury. What are the physical properties for the chemical element Mercury?
